fix(terminal): never lose keys typed before the terminal takes input - #2689
A key pressed right after a terminal opens, before the bridge says the pane takes input (input-ready), could vanish without a word. A letter went to the held draft, but Escape, Enter or an arrow was dropped silently. Found while checking #2440 (#2440 (comment)).
Fix
retainTyped (src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts, 7 lines): a key the draft cannot hold (Escape, Enter, an arrow) now shows "Not sent: the terminal is not ready for keys." instead of disappearing. The notice is skipped for Backspace, which edits the draft, and for what xterm sends by itself, which no one typed: focus and mouse reports, and its answers to the program's queries (ESC P, ESC ], and CSI ending in c/n/R/y/t). The message string already exists in every catalog.
Nothing typed before the pane takes input is sent by itself. Text waits in the draft for Send or Discard, as before.
Why not send early keys once the terminal is ready
Earlier heads of this PR queued early keys and sent them once the pane took input. Review kept reproducing the same class of failure. The bridge says input-ready before or while herdr draws the attach's first screen, so keys typed blind could land in a [sudo] password or y/n prompt drawn after them. They could also be sent after a restart that main held for review. No ordering signal from the bridge tells when the first screen is complete. So this PR takes the brief's other option: keep the keys visibly and never send them by themselves.
Validation
scripts/terminal-early-keys-demo-regression.ts (added to scripts/ci-browser.sh) runs the real client and xterm on the demo transport, holding input-ready back while x, y and Escape are typed:
The draft holds xy and the Escape is told.
After input-ready, nothing goes by itself: the only input frame is a later Escape.
The script awaits exact signals, with no sleeps.
Main (40dcae1) fails: an Escape typed before input-ready was dropped without a word: []. This change passes.
bun run check fast: ok.
Not run: check full, the full browser lane locally (CI runs it), and a manual pass on real herdr.
Text typed before a terminal is ready is held for review instead of being sent prematurely.
Keys that can’t be held, such as Escape, Enter, and arrow keys, now display a notice when they aren’t sent.
The terminal now reports when keys typed before readiness cannot be held for review. A browser regression checks held text, the notice for Escape before readiness, and Escape input after readiness.

Summary
Report input that cannot be held src/lib/useTerminalMount.ts, changelog.d/terminal-early-keys.md
retainTyped adds a “Not sent” error when input cannot be retained, with exclusions for Backspace/Delete-only input and listed escape-sequence patterns. The changelog describes the behavior.
Exercise early input in the browser scripts/terminal-early-keys-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh
The regression delays input-ready, checks the held text and “Not sent” notice, then verifies that Escape is sent after readiness. The browser lane runs the regression.
devswha/ovis#2673: Both changes retain terminal input for review at a connection boundary instead of sending it automatically.
devswha/ovis#1850: Both changes modify input handling in useTerminalMount when terminal readiness changes.

Explanation
The title "fix(terminal): never lose keys typed before the terminal takes input" matches the main change. The PR stops keys typed before input-ready from vanishing silently. Keys the draft cannot hold now show a "Not sent" notice, and text stays in the draft. The title says "never lose keys", which is broader than the approach, since Escape, Enter and arrows are reported rather than kept. It is still a fair summary of the primary change and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Change section that describes the problem, the resulting behavior, and the rationale for the approach. It has a Validation section that lists the commands run (bun run check fast) and the ones skipped (check full, the full browser lane locally, and a manual herdr pass). The description links issue #2440 as context. The template asks for a linked issue for features only, and this is a fix, so no link is required. The Change section does not name a feature issue, which is acceptable here.

MEDIUM, a regression from round 1: the reply regex caught Shift+F3 (ESC[1;2R) and missed DECRQM. The regex is gone. While a pane's attach is still opening, xterm leaves queries unanswered, through the existing queryReplies handlers (as for a parsed view). Main already dropped those answers before ready, so nothing changes there. Only focus reports are skipped from the wait.
MEDIUM: the pane-switch notice was cleared by the new pane's attach reset. It is now set after the switch commits.
HIGH (not reproduced): a password prompt in output parsed after input-ready. A new scenario in the regression script pushes Password: and input-ready together. It passed on ce9ef3c as well, so it does not count. The flush still waits for the output received before readiness to be parsed (an empty frame on the serial output queue) as a cheap guard.
Validation at 9ba2ef2: bun scripts/terminal-early-keys-demo-regression.ts passes both scenarios (the first fails on main 52f1bc6: [] sent). bun run check fast is ok.
HIGH (reproduced): early keys typed into a password prompt.took() sends input-ready before release() forwards the attach's held first screen, so the flush ran ahead of that screen. Early keys now wait until this attach's screen has reached the tab and been parsed. A newcomer gets its replay before ready, and a fresh attach gets its held screen right after (early/screen on the wait, HerdrSocket.sawOutput). The server order is unchanged: the client's recovery logic uses input-ready as its barrier, and older bridges on remote PCs keep the old order anyway. If no screen comes within 5 s, the keys go to the draft as before.
MEDIUM (reproduced): typing during a running attach's restart was auto-sent. The wait now starts only for an attach that has never taken input since this tab attached it (everReady in HerdrSocket.awaitsInput). An attach that loses input and gets it back holds typing for review, as on main.
LOW: queries left unanswered while an attach opens. This is intended. On main, xterm's answers in that window reached retainTyped and were dropped, because input was not ready. The comment at queryReplies says so.
Both reproduced cases are now scenarios in scripts/terminal-early-keys-demo-regression.ts, using the real server's frame order (ready, then the first screen):
9ba2ef2 fails them both: r is sent after the restart (+ 'r'), and the keys go into the prompt.
Codex (Terra 6.1, xhigh) re-review at a02129f: triage. The fixes ship in the next push (068df06, which is merged with main).
feat: web push alerts with the app closed #4 (fixed): input-ready: false while the early wait is still open. That wait now ends on the restart: what waited goes to the draft and is never sent.
Observe mode, held-input draft, and status push for every pane #1 (not reproduced): the first screen split across frames.took() runs holdFor after the attach's first output and release() forwards everything held as one frame, so the prompt arrives in the frame the wait parses. If no screen comes, the keys fall back to the draft after 5 s.

fix(terminal): never lose keys typed before the terminal takes input

Approach change. Earlier heads queued early keys and sent them once the pane took input. Across rounds, omo and Codex reproduced the same class of HIGH:
keys typed into a password prompt drawn in the attach's first screen, which the bridge announces as ready before it is complete;
keys sent after a restart that main held for review.
The bridge gives no signal that the first screen is complete, so the PR now takes the brief's other option. Early keys are never sent by themselves: text stays in the draft and keys the draft cannot hold are told. The src/ diff is 7 lines in retainTyped.

Distinguish user keys from xterm reports before skipping the notice.
Physical Shift+F3 produces \x1b[1;2R, and physical Alt+] can produce \x1b] when xterm uses Alt-as-Meta. While the pane cannot accept input, these user keys leave the draft unchanged and bypass the not-ready notice. This behavior predates this change; track it as a follow-up.

In the `typed.input` validation branch, distinguish physical user keys such as
Shift+F3 and Alt+] from xterm reports before suppressing the not-ready notice.
Establish a reliable distinction using the available input context; when the
pane cannot accept input, show the notice for user keys while preserving report
handling for genuine xterm reports.
Add an Escape-first case to cover the empty-draft notice.
The test types x and y before Escape. The notice check therefore runs only after the draft holds text. The branch that decides the notice reads only the incoming key, so a later change that ties the notice to the held draft would still pass this test. A regression like that would drop an Escape typed first without any notice, which the PR is meant to prevent.
Add a second attach where Escape is the first key typed before input-ready. Assert that the Not sent: the terminal is not ready for keys. notice appears.

Add a separate Escape-first case to the regression test before input becomes
ready: press Escape without typing x or y first, then assert that the “Not sent:

draft scenario intact.
Cover an early arrow notice in a check that Escape cannot satisfy.
The early-keys test sends only Escape before input-ready. An arrow takes the same refused sendKeys fallback and reaches the "Not sent" notice. The arrow-command regression sends arrows only after readiness, so no gated test checks that an arrow before readiness shows the notice. A regression that drops an early arrow without the notice would not fail the suite.
Add the arrow check without changing the Escape check. An arrow notice that remains visible would satisfy the Escape wait, so the arrow check needs its own fresh state or a banner reset before Escape.
